SAMS - Smart Ambulance Management System ( part 1 )
Research on how medical facilities and users interact in Indian context.
Course
Design Project - Fourth Semester
Interaction Design | System Design research
Duration
10 weeks
Overview
In an era where digitization is growing , the medical units still seems to rely on outdated communication methods, this is a work on reviewing why we need better medical communication systems between patients and other entities especially in a populated and developing nations like India. The research is to understand the painpoints of communication between medical facilities and its users.

Secondary Research Findings
Primary Research
I took a qualitative approach to understand and identify the problems while using the existing systems. Primary research was conducted to get a deeper understanding of the motivations and behaviors of the stakeholders. The interviews involved 6 doctors , 10 patients and some other healthcare facilitators ranging from lab technicians to emergency responders.
What people had to say
“Doctors seldom explains details of medicine and disease in details.”
— Anima Mandal ( Arthritis patient)
“ Video consultation are not that helpful compared to physical consultation”
— Santanu Patra ( Liver Patient)
“Patients often forget their records and prescriptions after consultation.”
— Dr. Debaditya Mallik
“Transporting body samples to Kolkata takes time and results are not always consistent”
— Sanjay Biswas ( Serum Pathologist)
“Patients tend to self medicate first then come for trained medical aid”
— Dr. Brajeswar Majumdar
“People come with medicine strips rather than prescriptions to pharmacy”
— Arun Shah ( Anjali Pharmacy )
Insights Generation
I collected data points from the primary research and performed an affinity map to derive themes and pattern to have a better understanding on what were some on the major issues in the existing system.
Insights
Upon doing the mind mapping and studying the secondary research findings I cam up with the following insights

What to choose ?
Once I got the insights of the pressing issues in the healthcare system and insights to resolve them. I took Emergency mitigation and deep dived into it to understand the causation and behaviors.
